The Frances was originally developed in Iceland in the late 70’s as a less complicated variation of Peter Dean’s Black Eyed Prawn Fly. It has proved to be phenomenally successful. Available in any number colors; red and black being the most common, to white, blue, olive and orange; and of variations from micro trebles to depth-plumbing cone tubes this is a hugely successful salmon fly. The Frances arrived in earnest to UK in the early 90’s with fishermen who had traveled to Iceland. It was a very successful fly on the Helmsdale River and is now somewhat of a standard fly for many UK salmon anglers.
